Phoenix College vs. Yavapai College Wrap Up…

PC lost their conference opener to Yavapai College last night, 87-82.  It was the first win for the Roughriders, as they made their return to the ACCAC.  Coach Eason saw many of the same issues rear their heads in this one, but is still optimistic about the season.

Coach Eason's Review….

Offense

  • Took advantage of some opportunities, but wasted others.
  • Didn't get to the foul line in the 2nd half (11-16 in the first. 1-5 in the second), and didn't shoot well when we got their; season worst 57%
  • Unforced TOs (5 of the 9) and poor execution in big spots.  The biggest was the last play of the game.
  • Shot the well from the field (47%) and from 3pt land (40%)
  • Offensive efficiency my be higher, if we want to win big games.

Defense

  • We cut down on our fouls, and the zone was a big part of that.
  • Did not defend the 3pt line well enough; as they hit 15 3s.
  • Allowed some lower scouting report guys too many points; over emphasizing their top guys (42 bench points).
  • Struggled to string together consecutive stops and secure crucial defensive rebounds.
  • Did not force enough turnovers (12 TOs), which lowered our number of transition opportunities.

Personnel

  • Jamar Brown led with 27pts, 10rebs, and 3asts
  • Mike Rogers continued his consistent play; 23pts, 6rebs, 9asts, 2stls, 2blks
  • Duane Rogers added 14pts, 7rebs, 6asts, and 1stl

Overview

"Tonight was a game we could have one, but we're not ready yet.  We still have guys trying to understand how to be college players, and others trying to understand how to be leaders.  As the season wears on, I expect to see some of these mistakes to disappear.  We don't need to play a perfect game to win, we just have to make the plays that we're supposed to make.  That's why I get paid; to take responsibility for our failures and help guide them to success."

The Bears are home next Wednesday, as they take on the Pima Aztecs.  The men tip off at 5:30pm, followed by the women's game.
