Phoenix College Falls in NJCAA DII Softball Tournament Opener, Will Play Again Wednesday

Phoenix College dropped its opening game of the NJCAA Division II Softball World Series, falling 6-1 to Northwest Mississippi Community College on Monday in Oxford, Alabama.

Northwest Mississippi jumped out early, scoring three runs in the first inning and three more in the second. Sommer Tyes led the charge, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, and two RBIs. Morgen Brewton earned the win in the circle, allowing just four hits and one run in a complete-game effort.

The Bears got their lone run in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly from Katie Hofmann that scored J'kaia' Graves. Phoenix was limited to four hits and left six runners on base.

The double-elimination tournament continues Wednesday, with Phoenix College scheduled to play an elimination game at 7:00 a.m. Arizona time. The Bears await the result of other opening-round games to learn their next opponent.
